Renting a Car at London Heathrow

London Heathrow (LHR) is Europe's busiest airport and one of the world's largest rental car hubs. The car hire centre is a dedicated facility connected to Terminals 2 and 3 by the Heathrow Car Hire Bus and to Terminals 4 and 5 by shuttle. All major brands — Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget, Sixt, Enterprise, National — operate from the central car hire centre.

Driving in the UK means driving on the left. If you're not used to this, spend a few minutes getting comfortable in the car park before joining the motorway. Petrol prices are moderate by European standards but higher than in Poland or Lithuania.

Important Notes for Heathrow Car Hire

  • Drive on the left. The UK has left-hand traffic — factor in extra time to adapt if you're used to driving on the right.
  • Congestion Charge. Driving into Central London (Zone 1) on weekdays incurs the London Congestion Charge (£15/day). Many rental agreements require you to manage this yourself.
  • ULEZ. Ultra Low Emission Zone — check whether your rental vehicle meets the emission standard before entering central London.
  • Fuel. Petrol (gasoline) here is called 'petrol', diesel is 'diesel'. Ensure you fill with the correct type.
